How do i bake natural clay at home?

If you bake it in a home oven, you will have hard dry lumps of dirt that will be fairly fragile. To fire clay requires temps well over 1500F so that it partially vitrifies (makes it somewhat glass like) You can probably find a shop with a kiln in Portland, but they may be leery of natural clay if it wasn't cleaned.
